Some Feedback
12.23.06 (1:24 am)   [edit]

Okay... I've been reading the comments on my last post for... At least 45 minutes. Thanks for all of your input! I'm truly glad that this discussion is taking place. The majority of you are not in favor of *more* censorship, and neither are we. Things will continue pretty much as always. What we don't want here at tBlog is a hostile environment that scares prospective new users away (and yes, I probably crossed the line a little in my desire to maintain this). I do understand that we have a diverse userbase, and that some users are more (or less) sensitive than others. I honestly would prefer that you deal with any "issues" amongst yourselves as adults. If you don't like somebody, ignore them! Don't read their blogs, don't respond to their tBlurts, etc...

Unfortunately *some* "policing" is required to run sites of this nature (mostly to combat spammers). You may be interested to know that I do *screen* almost every blog post (have been for at least 6 months), and I am quite aggressive when it comes to removing porn blogs (btw: I don't consider some woman writing about her sexual adventures porn... a little strange, but certainly not porn), gambling blogs, and pharmaceutical blogs. I have removed over 30,000 of these blogs (and related data) this year, and will continue to remove them as I see them. Promoters of the three subjects listed above almost DESTROYED tBlog in 2005 (by automating account creation, posting and commenting -- remember the frequent server crashes?), and they are not welcome here at all. I am aware that some of you consider the actions of these *jerks* (I'm being very polite) freedom of speech, and while *technically speaking* that may be... they're still not welcome here (and that is final). I am also aware that some of their accounts still exist (especially the older ones), and surface from time-to-time, but with nearly 200,000 users, we just don't have the time or resources to find them all.

Lindy: I'm almost positive that we tMailed everybody about the elimination of PRO accounts, but for your information they've been gone since February (and since they were charged @ $20 per year, most "paid" accounts have surely expired by now). All non-commercial blog accounts are currently FREE.

Regarding tBlurts: While charging tBucks for tBlurts seems like a good idea on the surface, there are a few downsides to this (as pointed out) and we will not be implementing that idea at this time.

I'm sure that I have not addressed everything with this post (there were many), so if something is still burning, let me know.

Town Hall?
12.19.06 (8:10 pm)   [edit]

Today I've been receiving some flack because I warned a couple users about making personal attacks against other users.  I did not say they were guilty of this offence; I simply indicated that I had received complaints from some other users, and that their actions were be ing monitored.  Personally I'm not interested in playing the "he said", "she said" game.  I really don't have the time or the patience for that...  On the other hand, we obviously cannot tolerate users attacking each other; personally, racially, or otherwise...

So what should we do in these situations?

To me this is mostly common sense (treat others as you wish to be treated), but some users are asking for "ground rules" when it comes to tBlurt, tMail and Commenting (what you post on your blog is your own business in my opinion -- unless it violates our terms and conditions).

Not a bad idea... We can call them the 7 laws of tBlog Smile (or something like that).  And guess what?  These rules will set by you, the users of tBlog.  Let us know what you consider important (be reasonable) in terms of rules, and I'll start compiling a list...  Please comment away (cringe)...

Logging System Update
12.18.06 (10:23 pm)   [edit]

The stats system has been turned back on, but we're currently only tracking visits by other tBlog users, and visits generated via a referrer (for example: a visitor links to your blog via a search engine, another web site, or another blog).  This is the most interesting and informative data IMHOP.

Unfortunately, this is the current comprimise between collecting too much visitor data, and not collecting any visitor dat a...  Our primary focus here is (and should be) blogging, and we consider stats a much lower priority; especially when it comes to site uptime and responsiveness.  What are your thoughts?

Logging System
12.16.06 (12:51 am)   [edit]

Some of you have pointed out that the logging system is not functioning correctly... This is why: Our current logging system consists of approximately 7 million records on average, and the constant insertion and deletion of these records is having an impact on the server performance, so we shut logging off (temporarily) until we can put a more efficient system into place...

Thanks for your continued patience and understanding!

Tutorial: YouTube Videos
12.02.06 (2:32 pm)   [edit]

Hey tBloggers! Users keep asking me "How do I add a YouTube video to my blog?", and quite honestly I didn't know what to tell them... Turns out its as easy as pie (What the heck does that mean anyhow? Is pie easy?)!

1). Visit YouTube.com and find the video that you want to insert into your post. Once you have located the video, look for the text field titled "Embed" (to the right of all videos) and copy the code.

2). Return to tBlog and create a new post using the plain view (it helps if you know a little HTML).  Paste the YouTube code into the post editor (I'm going to paste it right after this paragraph), select a category, and click the Publish button.

And that should do it... You might also want to use HTML to center the video just for kicks.

New Support Page
11.21.06 (12:11 am)   [edit]

Hey everybody,

Its official!  I just added our new support page (special thanks to Inkspector for all of her help) to the main menu... Hopefully this will make it a bit easier for newbies (and even some of the "veterans") to find their way... Smile

Let me know if we missed anything obvious!

Thanks,

Nick

This & That
10.30.06 (6:38 pm)   [edit]

New Categories:

I added a few new categories today (classifieds, music, real estate, travel), and the category pages now contain the first 200 characters from every post for better screening.

Browser Compatibility:

We're still looking for firefox, safari and mozilla users that are having problems with the site... Please tmail your (tblog related) problems to me and we'll get them resolved for once and for all!

Posting & Editing:

We're also planning to make some improvements to the posting system in the near future.  Which view do you use the most?  Which features do you consider the most important?  What new features would you like see?

Posting Comments
10.27.06 (6:30 pm)   [edit]
UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE: Visitors will not be able to post comments to your blog unless they are logged into the system. This is a temporary fix until we find a more permanent/agreeable solution. This (extreme according to some...) action is to due an earlier spam attack, and ongoing problems with spammers. We are currently considering a visual verification system as our permanent solution. While I know this is not ideal for everybody, it does permit non-members to post comments, while preventing the automated spam systems from making posts.

Some Interesting Stats
10.11.06 (3:38 pm)   [edit]

I compiled a some interesting stats (interesting to me anyway) while researching a problem for one of our Mac users earlier today.  I reviewed the data for the last million visitors and this is what I found:

 Browser UsedVisitors
 Internet Explorer 820,116
 Firefox 287,761
 Safari (Mac) 20,670
 Opera 19,537
 Netscape 10,034
 Konqueror 8,998
 Mozilla 6101

The big surprise here (okay... i haven't looked in quite a while), was the market share that Firefox has gained!

Operating System  Used By
 Windows 91.90%
 Linux 4.44%
 Mac 3.26%

Linux is more popular than Mac?  According to our visitors it is...

Screen Resolution  Used By
 1024x768 57.52%
 800x600 16.33%
 1280x1024 10.45%

FYI: 640x480 was in 15th place @ 0.22%... LOL

About Nickster
09.29.06 (8:12 pm)   [edit]

I've been involved with tBlog for several years now, and as many of you know, I don't blog much... What do I do here? Besides policing the tblogosphere, I browse the blogs. And I have to say that I love the way you guys make them "your own"; the way your personalities come out in your choice of colors, the photos and graphics that you post, the music you select, and the words that you write. Many of you pour your souls out here. Some of you simply write to be social, some write for work, and others clearly write to deal with the twists and turns that life throws at us every day... Our "community" consists of people from all walks of life... Teachers, doctors, students; even a resident pastor! We have users writing (possibly spamming) in languages that I can't read, a soldier writing from Iraq (come to think of it... I haven't "seen" him lately...), and... have I missed anybody? Of course I have... There are literally thousands of you...

Now some of you are probably wondering (or not)... Who is Nickster?

Here I am in a nutshell... My name is Nick (surprise). I own a small web hosting and development company (Mediast) in British Columbia Canada, and I'm a partner in tBlog LLC. I'm also a partner in a small rental management company, and I'm (proud to be) the president of a local (22+ member) volunteer search and rescue team... In my spare time (heh), I like to go boating, rafting, hiking, climbing and cycling (mostly cycling these days). We (my gf and I) own a small house (built in 1949) that has seen ongoing renovations since we bought it just over 2 years ago... We work hard and we don't play nearly enough (that really needs to change)...

There you have it... Now you know Nickster... Cool
